A Look Back In Talladega History: Grant Adcox - The ARCA Ace

While Dale Earnhardt Jr. is well known at Talladega Superspeedway for his amazing run of four consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins, he wasn’t the first driver to accomplish such a streak.  Instead that honor lies with former ARCA RE/MAX series driver Grant Adcox, who recorded four consecutive victories in ARCA competition from May 1986 to July 1987.

The fact that Adcox’s best finish at Talladega prior to his streak, a fourth place finish in the 1977 ARCA 200, came nearly ten years prior, wasn’t lost on the competitor. During his five previous ARCA races, spanning from 1975 to 1985, his average finishing position was 14.4.

“You have to stop and consider that this is a major event at a major racing facility,” Adcox said in an interview prior to the 1988 Permaxtex 500k.  “Then, factor in everything that has to come together to win a major race on a superspeedway.  The most minor mechanical failure, one miscue on pit road, one wrong decision on race strategy…anything can cause you to lose the race.  We certainly would like to continue beating the odds, but you’ve got to know the odds will eventually catch up with you.”

Unfortunately for Adcox, his premonition was all too real.  His streak was broken later that weekend when he finished second behind hometown hero Red Farmer.  Luckily for Adcox, his hard feelings didn’t last long, as only three months later he would return to Gatorade Victory Lane at Talladega Superspeedway in the 1988 Talladega ARCA 500k. His average finishing position during the six race stretch reaching an unbelievable 1.2.

In 2009, Talladega Superspeedway proudly celebrates forty years of the most competitive racing in NASCAR.  While the track has seen changes made to the cars that circle its high-banks, the surface that they race on and the grandstands that thousands of fans fill twice a year, one constant remains; Talladega Superspeedway is authentic NASCAR racing at its finest.
