Only days remain until the Oct. 5-7 UAW-Ford 500 event weekend at Talladega Superspeedway and ARCA RE/MAX Series drivers Mike Harmon and Justin South are counting down the hours. Both drivers are Alabama natives and will be racing the ARCA RE/MAX Series 250 on Friday, Oct. 5.
"I love racing at Talladega, it's my favorite track," Harmon said. "I've never been on a track as smooth as Talladega since it's been repaved. The new surface really enhances the grip and makes better drafting, which is important on big tracks like Talladega."
Harmon finished 13th last year in the ARCA RE/MAX Series 250 and is looking forward to coming back this fall for his eighth ARCA race at Talladega. When asked about his race strategies for the 2.66-mile superspeedway, he replied, "I try to lay low until the end and when those last few laps arrive, I make a run for the front. If you're running up front in those last few laps, then you have a shot to win."
South finished 14th last year in his first race at Talladega Superspeedway and participated in a test session at Talladega earlier this year. After gaining seat time South says he has a new perspective on racing at Talladega.
"I wasn't as aggressive as I should have been sitting under a car that was capable of more than what I was asking," South said. "This year I am not going to drive my car that way."
South is racing a full ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule for the first time this year, and has a total of eight top-10s and one top-five. South tested at Talladega on Sept. 25 along with other ARCA RE/MAX drivers preparing for the Oct. 5 race.
The 2007 UAW-Ford 500 weekend at Talladega Superspeedway will be held on Oct. 5-7 and will consist of the ARCA RE/MAX Series 250 on Friday, followed by the Mountain Dew 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Saturday. The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Car of Tomorrow will make its first appearance in a superspeedway race on Sunday, Oct. 7, which is also the fourth race in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup. Kids age 11 and younger are admitted free of charge on Friday and Saturday of race weekends in the general admission grandstands at Talladega Superspeedway.
