The coordinated efforts of Talladega Superspeedway, local radio station WTDR Thunder 92.7 FM and generous individuals throughout the community raised more than $13,000 during Bake A Christmas 2006 held Friday, Dec. 15, exceeding last year's total by more than $1,000. This was the tenth consecutive year for Bake A Christmas, an annual radio auction that generates money used to provide Christmas gifts to less fortunate children throughout the track's surrounding region. Talladega Superspeedway management joined WTDR 92.7 FM Owner and Producer Jim Jacobs and his staff on-air throughout the day to chat with listeners and keep the auctions rolling while donations of baked goods, racing memorabilia and other items such as gift certificates from local merchants flowed in throughout the day. These items were paired with items donated by the track in advance of the event for truly unique auction packages offered to the listening public. "I can't think of better news to end the year than to hear we were able to increase the amount of aid to kids in our community at Christmas time," said Talladega Superspeedway President Grant Lynch. "It is such a rewarding experience to be involved with Bake A Christmas each year, and we are so grateful to everyone who participated to make it a success." Jacobs echoed that sentiment and thanked all who enabled the auction total to grow this year. "Each year we are humbled by the generosity of our listeners and want to thank everyone for their help in increasing our total for 2006, because that means we can help more people," Jacobs said. "To everyone who placed a bid, businesses and individuals who donated merchandise or baked goods, and race fans who gave up part of their own memorabilia collections to contribute to the auction, please know that you have done a wonderful thing that will make Christmas special for kids and families in need." Not only did auction bidders have the immediate gratification of knowing their bids would be used for such a good cause, but they also benefited by securing truly unique items to give as gifts or enjoy in the coming new year. Among the items auctioned were official Sunoco race flags signed by the drivers who participated in this year's Aaron's 499 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series and Food World 250 ARCA RE/MAX Series races, several hats autographed by various NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers, die-cast stock car replicas, and autographed crew shirts from various NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race teams. Also hitting the auction block to the delight of listeners were several once-in-a-lifetime experiences, such as garage passes and pace car rides to be honored during the 2007 Aaron's Dream Weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. The largest bid this year came from a local listener who purchased a $2,000 package containing both autographed race flags mentioned above, two tickets to the Sunday, April 29 Aaron's 499 and the Saturday, April 28 Aaron's 312, and two cold garage passes to be honored during the 2007 Aaron's Dream Weekend. Another spectacular item donated by a listener from Saks was an 8"-by-10" image of the No. 28 Texaco Havoline car, autographed by Davey Allison. The station had the print framed early in the morning, and the collectible sold for $200 later in the afternoon. Of course those who missed the chance to bid on items Friday can still take care of the race fans on their holiday shopping lists by purchasing gift certificates that may be used at NASCAR's Most Competitive Track. The first opportunity to use them will be during the 2007 Aaron's Dream Weekend set for April 27-29, which features the Aaron's 312 NASCAR Busch Series race on Saturday, April 28 and the Aaron's 499 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on Sunday, April 29. Kids age 11 and younger are admitted free of charge when accompanied by a ticketed adult on Friday and Saturday.
