Vote Now For Talladega!
Fans May Cast Votes Now At www.southernsportsawards.com
Talladega Superspeedway recently hosted an unprecedented crowd for its UAW-Ford 500 weekend and rewarded fans with some of the most spectacular racing to date at the historic track. As a result the event has earned a berth in the "Best Ticket" category of Southern Sports Awards (SSA's) online voting, which opened Oct. 27 at www.southernsportsawards.com. Fans may cast ballots through December 4.
This year marks the second production of the SSA's, created by Edge Marketing in association with Lincoln Financial Sports (formerly Jefferson-Pilot Sports) to recognize and honor the athletes, fans and traditions that "set the South above the rest in the sports world." Last year, Talladega Superspeedway soundly clinched "Best Place To Tailgate" honors, with renowned sportscaster Eli Gold accepting the award on behalf of the track in the two-hour program seen by over a half million viewers.
"We were honored last year to earn the 'Best Place To Tailgate' honor from the Southern Sports Awards, because our tailgating atmosphere is a huge part of our events. But we feel it is even higher honor to be nominated in the 'Best Ticket' category because it encompasses an even wider scope of our fans' experiences while at our facility, from the atmosphere to the racing to the overall entertainment value," said Talladega Superspeedway Vice President/General Manager Rick Humphrey. "We hope our fans will go the www.southernsportsawards.com site to reinforce the overwhelming support they gave us by attending our event this fall."
The 2nd SSA's will be taped Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Davidson College's Duke Family Performance Hall in Davidson, NC, and will premier on Dec. 9 in primetime in markets via major networks. Last year's program featured a wide variety of star presenters and nominees from across the sports and entertainment business, including Richard Petty, Dean Smith, Burt Reynolds, Bobby Bowden, Charlie Daniels, Clint Black, James Carville, Steve Spurrier, Frank Beemer, Paula Dean and many more.
In addition to Talladega Superspeedway's nomination, the world of NASCAR is well-represented throughout the categories. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne are among "Fan Favorite" nominees. Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup contenders Jeff Burton and Denny Hamlin are nominated in the "Revival of the Year" and "Newcomer of the Year" categories respectively. In the "Performance of the Year - Team" category are former NASCAR Busch Series driver (now driver of the No. 38 Robert Yates Racing M&M's Ford) David Gilliland's underdog Busch Series win earlier this year, along with double-duty driver Kevin Harvick's clinching of the NASCAR Busch Series championship with the largest point-margin on record. In addition, the "Team of the Year - Professional" and "Coach of the Year" categories offer the opportunity for fans to vote for the yet-to-be-determined 2006 Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup winning team and crew chief.
While the 2006 NASCAR season is winding down with only three races to go, Talladega Superspeedway officials have already begun preparations to ensure its 2007 events are once again "Best Ticket" opportunities for fans.
